The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) has been reimposed in six police station areas in Manipur amidst escalating violence and law-and-order concerns. The affected areas include police stations in Moirang (Bishnupur district), Lamlai (Imphal East), Jiribam (Jiribam district), Leimakhong (Kangpokpi district), and Sekmai and Lamsang (Imphal West).
This decision follows a series of violent incidents, including encounters and kidnappings, and aims to curb militancy and restore order. The move has sparked criticism, with opposition and civil society groups questioning its effectiveness and raising concerns about its impact on civil liberties. Activists have long opposed AFSPA due to its sweeping powers and lack of accountability.
The Manipur government had previously reduced AFSPA’s coverage, exempting certain urban and valley areas in 2022 and 2023. However, recent developments have led to its partial reinstatement.
